Château Montrose 2025: misschien wel de ultieme ‘Super Second’
Er zijn maar weinig châteaux in Bordeaux die zo vaak in één adem worden genoemd met de Premiers Grands Crus Classés als Château Montrose. Het château uit Saint-Estèphe behoort officieel tot de Deuxièmes Crus van de classificatie van 1855, maar heeft de afgelopen decennia een reputatie opgebouwd die daar ver bovenuit stijgt. Een reeks legendarische jaargangen leverde perfecte scores op van vooraanstaande internationale critici. Zo groeide Montrose uit tot een van de meest indrukwekkende en gewilde wijnen van Bordeaux.
Die reputatie is geen toeval. Al meer dan twee eeuwen wordt hier gebouwd aan kwaliteit. Van Etienne Théodore Dumoulin, die in 1815 de eerste wijnstokken plantte op een vergeten grindheuvel aan de Gironde, tot Mathieu Dollfus, die een windmolen liet bouwen om de wijngaarden te beschermen tegen phylloxera. Ook vandaag de dag blijft Montrose pionieren. Onder de familie Bouygues beschikt het château over een van de meest duurzame wijnkelders van Bordeaux, met geothermie, zonnepanelen en een vrijwel energieneutrale infrastructuur.
De Bordeaux En Primeur-campagne 2025 bevestigt wederom waarom Montrose tot de absolute elite behoort. Een wijn met grote precisie, kracht en elegantie, afkomstig van de historische Terrasse 4, het kloppend hart van de wijngaard. Diep van kleur en indrukwekkend gelaagd. In de neus ontvouwen zich aroma's van cassis, bramen, viooltjes, grafiet, cederhout en een subtiele toets van truffel en specerijen. De smaak is krachtig maar verfijnd, met een uitzonderlijke concentratie van donker fruit, een minerale kern en tannines van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit. Tonen van cacao, potloodslijpsel, munt en zoethout zorgen voor extra diepgang. Ondanks zijn kracht behoudt de wijn een opvallende frisheid en precisie. De afdronk is vrijwel eindeloos. Een klassieke Montrose met een enorm bewaarpotentieel, goed voor tientallen jaren ontwikkeling.

"A timeless classic in the making, the 2025 Montrose unfurls in the glass with notes of dark berries, black truffle, burning embers and violets, gaining in range and detail with aeration. Full-bodied, dense and elegantly muscular, it's layered and multidimensional, with a prodigiously concentrated core of fruit, exceptional quality of tannin and a long, resonant finish. The 2025 is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, derived exclusively from the estate's historic core on the fourth terrace situated just in front of the château itself. With a pH of 3.65 and 13.4% alcohol, it remains classically balanced despite its impressive power and intensity. Readers will have a fascinating time parsing the nuances of style and quality between the 2025, 2023 and 2022 over the decades to come!"

"The 2025 Montrose only comes from the Terrace IV, as has been the way since the 2023 vintage. It was picked from August 29 and finished not until September 20, so quite a long harvest, 16 days of picking between those dates. This vintage is matured in 60% new oak. This has another very intense nose with a potent graphite element that infuses the black fruit, beautifully defined but unapologetically classical in style. Wow. The purity of fruit is exceptional. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, very chiselled tannins, exquisite black fruit loaded with minéralité. So much freshness and vibrancy, gentle but insistent grip, very precise and refined on the finish, this is a Montrose that will rank as one for the ages. Wow (again). Drinking Window: 2032 - 2060."

La Dame de Montrose 2025 combineert de elegantie van Merlot met de frisheid en structuur van Saint-Estèphe. De geur opent met zwarte kersen, bramen, viooltjes, tabak en een verfijnde toets van bloedsinaasappel. In de mond is de wijn soepel en energiek, met sappig donker fruit, rijpe kersen, cassis en frambozen. De tannines zijn verfijnd en krijtachtig van structuur, terwijl subtiele tonen van kruiden, chocolade en zoethout voor extra complexiteit zorgen. "Incredible colour in the glass, bright pink-purple rim. Wild blue and black bramble berries with a salty tangy aspect on the nose – fresh and fragrant. Cool too. Smooth and shiny, this is sleek, really lively and upfront with such a juicy, fresh core. Quite lightly presented – definitely fine, delicate and refined with a soft edge of liquorice and clove. Really quite a hands-off style but there’s power surging through without the muscle. Quite impressive. 3.5pH. 76 IPT. 8% press. Ageing 12 months: 15% new oak, 20% foudre, 5% amphoras and the rest one-year-old barrels."
