Château Gloria
In de Gloria riep mijn vader altijd bij deze prachtige wijn. Château Gloria is een creatie van de legendarische, uit een kuipersfamilie afkomstige Henri Martin. Deze Martin wist het door zijn vader verkochte wijngoed rang voor rang opnieuw te verwerven; alle grond komt van Cru Classés. De wijn heeft een aimabel karakter en een gewoonlijk genereuze, zacht fruitige, van rondingen voorziene smaak, heel toegankelijk. Ongeveer een derde van zijn rijpingsvaten is nieuw. Hallelujah! De hemel op aarde! Nog steeds!

Wijnhuis "Château Gloria"
Château Gloria is stuk voor stuk opgebouwd; door de jaren heen zijn diverse percelen in Saint-Julien aangekocht, waarvan een groot deel bestaat uit Grand Cru's. Château Gloria heeft geen officiële cru status, simpelweg omdat ze in 1855 nog niet bestonden en deze status is gebonden aan chateaus.
Dat doet overigens niets ten onder aan de kwaliteit, want hierom staan ze wereldwijd bekend. De wijngaarden zijn aangeplant met 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 5% Petit Verdot. De druiven worden zorgvuldig met de hand geplukt en gevinifieerd in roestvrijstalen tanks waarbij de temperatuur optimaal te beheersen is. Vervolgens rijpt de wijn in eikenhouten vaten gedurende 14 maanden. Hiervan wordt gemiddeld 40% vernieuwd.

Robert Parker
Opaque purple-black colored, the 2020 Gloria comes soaring out of the glass with notes of blackcurrant cordial, preserved plums and blueberry compote, followed by suggestions of powdered cinnamon, cedar chest and menthol, plus a waft of graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate is completely coated with juicy black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot, aging for approximately 14 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. The alcohol is 13.3%.

Vinous
The 2020 Gloria is another Saint-Julien with an unapologetically backward nose, yet it has razor-sharp delineation and superb mineralité. It's just tightly coiled at the moment. Very harmonious, the palate is medium-bodied and satiny in texture, with sapid black fruit and a precocious yet beautifully controlled and persistent finish. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

This is poised and elegant with notes of bitter chocolate, crushed walnuts, black peppercorns, blackberries and blackcurrants. It’s medium-bodied with silky tannins and layers of fresh black fruit. Classy. Try from 2026.

Decanter
Tobacco, dark chocolate and scented flowers on the nose - beautiful aromatic display. Ripe and concentrated fruit but with clarity and precision alongside savoury elements of coffee, cola and creamy blackcurrants. Tannins are rich and grippy edged by liquorice and a salty minerality giving St-Julien typicity. Charming with energy and poise.
