Château Gloria

Château Gloria is de legendarische creatie van Henri Martin, afkomstig uit een kuipersfamilie. Met grote vasthoudendheid bracht hij perceel na perceel samen, allemaal afkomstig van Crus Classés in Saint-Julien. Het resultaat is een wijngoed zonder officiële classificatie, maar met een reputatie die zich kan meten met de beste buren. De wijn heeft een aimabel karakter: genereus, zacht fruitig en rond van stijl, altijd toegankelijk. Ongeveer een derde van de vaten is nieuw eiken, wat voor extra finesse en diepgang zorgt. Gloria bewijst keer op keer waarom ze tot de meest geliefde wijnen van Bordeaux behoort - een glas vol harmonie en gulheid.

Wijnhuis "Château Gloria"

Château Gloria is stapje voor stapje opgebouwd; door de jaren heen zijn diverse percelen in Saint-Julien aangekocht, waarvan een groot deel bestaat uit Grand Cru's. Château Gloria heeft geen officiële cru-status, simpelweg omdat ze in 1855 nog niet bestonden en deze status is gekoppeld aan chateaus.

Dat zegt overigens niets over de kwaliteit, want Château Gloria staat wereldwijd bekend om haar topwijnen. De wijngaarden zijn aangeplant met 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc en 5% Petit Verdot. De druiven worden zorgvuldig met de hand geplukt en gevinifieerd in roestvrijstalen tanks waarbij de temperatuur optimaal te beheersen is. Vervolgens rijpt de wijn in eikenhouten vaten gedurende 14 maanden. Hiervan wordt gemiddeld 40% vernieuwd.

Robert Parker Opaque purple-black colored, the 2020 Gloria comes soaring out of the glass with notes of blackcurrant cordial, preserved plums and blueberry compote, followed by suggestions of powdered cinnamon, cedar chest and menthol, plus a waft of graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate is completely coated with juicy black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot, aging for approximately 14 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. The alcohol is 13.3%.

Vinous The 2020 Gloria is another Saint-Julien with an unapologetically backward nose, yet it has razor-sharp delineation and superb mineralité. It's just tightly coiled at the moment. Very harmonious, the palate is medium-bodied and satiny in texture, with sapid black fruit and a precocious yet beautifully controlled and persistent finish. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

James Suckling This is poised and elegant with notes of bitter chocolate, crushed walnuts, black peppercorns, blackberries and blackcurrants. It’s medium-bodied with silky tannins and layers of fresh black fruit. Classy. Try from 2026.

Decanter Tobacco, dark chocolate and scented flowers on the nose - beautiful aromatic display. Ripe and concentrated fruit but with clarity and precision alongside savoury elements of coffee, cola and creamy blackcurrants. Tannins are rich and grippy edged by liquorice and a salty minerality giving St-Julien typicity. Charming with energy and poise.
