Omschrijving
Als één van de best bewaarde geheimen van de Médoc behoort Château Saint-Pierre tot de prestigieuze rang van 4e Grand Cru Classé (1855). Gelegen in het hart van Saint-Julien, de appellatie waar finesse en kracht samenkomen, levert dit historische château wijnen die liefhebbers en kenners weten te waarderen.
Met slechts 17 hectare is Saint-Pierre de kleinste Grand Cru Classé van Saint-Julien, maar wat het in omvang mist, maakt het ruimschoots goed in karakter. De wijngaarden, rijk aan kiezelbodems, zijn voornamelijk beplant met Cabernet Sauvignon, aangevuld met Merlot en een vleugje Cabernet Franc.
Onder de bezielende leiding van de familie Van den Bussche (ook eigenaar van Château Gloria) heeft Château Saint-Pierre de afgelopen decennia een indrukwekkende opmars gemaakt. De wijnen blinken uit in diepgang, structuur en elegantie, met een klassiek profiel dat schittert na enkele jaren rijping.
Saint-Pierre is een echte Saint-Julien: betrouwbaar, verfijnd en met een prachtige balans tussen kracht en souplesse. Een Grand Cru Classé die nog steeds een uitstekende prijs-kwaliteitverhouding biedt binnen de top van Bordeaux.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Saint-Pierre bursts with baked blackberries, stewed plums and cassis, followed by hints of dried mint, chocolate box and tapenade with a waft of pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled with impressive freshness and ripe, fine-grained tannins supporting the energetic black fruits, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, aging for around 14 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. The alcohol is 13.3%.

The 2020 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is loaded with scents of blackberry jam, dried herbs, graphite, incense, espresso and licorice. This powerful, tannic Saint-Julien is going to need years to soften, but it is incredibly impressive in the early going. From barrel, the 2020 was quite unctuous, but today it has grown into a wine that marries opulence with classicism in grand style. The intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon really comes through.

Attractive aromas of blackberries, plum skins, cloves, cardamom, dark chocolate, cedar and graphite. Some wet stones, too. Full-bodied, opulent and broad-shouldered. Structured and refined. It has a deep core of ripe black fruit covered with layers of plush and velvety tannins that linger for a long time on the palate. Really long and even. Try after 2027.

Decanter
Quite reduced on the nose, a salty oyster shell and iron nuance with slightly granular tannins. Fruit is ripe and this has a deep, rich and wide structure and frame with firm tannins, a cool minty freshness and good balance. Powerful and concentrated, an opulent showing with floral notes, blackcurrant jam, dried herbs and liquorice. Impressive but will take a while to soften and fully shine.
