Château Canon, 1er Grand Cru Classé B
Canon heeft een verleidelijk aroma van kersen en ander rood fruit verpakt in een vleug viooltjes, herfstachtig bos, met een mokka randje. Die verleiding gaat door in de mond waarin de licht zoete merlot omlijst wordt door een fijne kruidigheid van de eiken fusten die voor 70% nieuw zijn. De wijn is fris, zeer goed in balans en vol energie. De merlot laat zich van zijn beste kant zien, boterzacht en zijdeachtig zoals bij alle grote Saint-Emilions en Pomerols.

Wijnhuis "Château Canon"
Wie goed heeft gekeken in Saint-Émilion de afgelopen jaren, heeft kunnen zien hoe Château Canon stilletjes naar de top is geklommen. Het wijnhuis is bescheiden in stijl en de wijnen dragen datzelfde elegante, precieze karakter. Canon anno nu hoort zonder twijfel bij de elite van Saint-Émilion, en wordt in één adem genoemd met namen als Angélus, Ausone, Cheval Blanc en Figeac. Meer nog: het wordt regelmatig genoemd als kandidaat voor de allerhoogste 'Premier Grand Cru Classé A'-status in een toekomstige classificatie.
Het château is sinds 1996 in handen van Chanel en beschikt over 34 hectare wijngaard, waarvan 24 hectare geclassificeerd zijn als Premier Grand Cru Classé. De kern van het domein ligt op 22 aaneengesloten hectare op het kalkplateau naast het dorp, met buren als Clos Fourtet en Bélair-Monange. De bodem - rijk aan fossiele kalk en klei - biedt een uitzonderlijke balans tussen drainage en vochtretentie, wat elk jaar opnieuw zorgt voor frisheid en finesse.
Cabernet franc speelt een steeds grotere rol in de blend, mede dankzij zijn weerstand tegen hitte. Sinds 2024 is Canon bovendien officieel biologisch gecertificeerd.
Een van de meest verfijnde en betrouwbare Saint-Émilions van dit moment - nog altijd relatief bescheiden geprijsd.

A blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, the 2025 Canon continues this property's brilliant decade-long run of exceptional wines. Unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet of cherries and raspberries mingled with hints of exotic spices, licorice and petals, it's medium- to full-bodied, suave and concentrated, with a bright spine of acidity and a long, penetrating finish. Harvest stretched from August 28 to September 18.

The 2025 Canon is a total stunner. Deep and sumptuous in the glass, it offers tons of the vintage's textural intensity along with all the vibrant, saline energy that is such a signature here. Dark-fleshed fruit, mocha, new leather, herbs and dried flowers build gradually in the glass, leading to a huge, dramatic finish laced with hints of blood orange, pomegranate and chalk. The interplay of finesse and power is dazzling. Tasted two times.

An outstanding Canon. Cherry, cola, liquorice, slate, blackcurrant with a milk chocolate dusting. Smooth and impactful from the start – chewy but juicy, round, alive and filling – mature but there’s no overt sun in the glass. You can feel the Cabernet Franc and the coolness all round. Good structure, maybe more serious than some Canons in the past, but there’s such purity and focus with excellent tannins as well as plenty of blackcurrants, red cherries and hints of raspberry too Complexity and nuance in abundance. A fabulous wine in the making. Authentic.
