De diepe, paarsrode kleur is een voorbode van de expressieve neus met tonen van zwart fruit, zoals zwarte kersen en bessen. Gaandeweg ontvouwen zich aardse en florale tonen, subtiel omrandt door specerijen en een minerale ondertoon. Een volle en levendige wijn met stevige tannines, die tevens een mooie verfijning kent. De spanning houdt aan gedurende de lange afdronk.

Wijnhuis "Château Smith Haut Lafitte"
Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé uit het klassement van Graves, ligt in Martillac, tegen de stad Bordeaux aan. Alles draait hier om de bodem. Het Château respecteert de natuur en biodiversiteit in de wijngaard en kelder. Ze planten wijnstokken die ze zelf kweken op het 'eiland' Ile de Lalande om genetische diversiteit te behouden. De wijngaard van 78 hectare (waarvan 67 voor rood) is omringd door bossen, hagen en bijenkorven.
De bodem, bedekt met "Graves Gunziennes" laat de wijnstokken diep wortelen om voedingsstoffen te vinden. De stenen reflecteren bovendien de zon voor perfecte druivenrijping. Dit resulteert in witte wijnen met een subtiele rokerige smaak en geconcentreerde, sexy en complexe rode wijnen. Het Château werkt sinds 2019 biologisch en past waar mogelijk biodynamie toe. Dit alles draagt bij aan de harmonie met de natuur, want "wijnbouwers zijn landschapsarchitecten". Sinds het Château in 1990 in handen kwam van Daniel en Florence Cathiard heeft de kwaliteit een enorme vlucht genomen door investeringen in de kelder, de overstap naar handmatig oogsten en een strenge selectie. In 1995 bouwden ze hun eigen tonnellerie waar 70% van de gebruikte vaten op het Château vandaan komt.

Vinous
The 2025 Smith Haut Lafitte was picked between September 3 and 30 at 28 hl/ha and raised in 50% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet with mainly black fruit intertwined with Earl Grey, sous-bois and cigar box scents, a much more classical style of Smith Haut-Lafitte compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a subtle tobacco note that percolates through the black fruit, more structure coming through towards the sapid finish with a dash of black pepper on the aftertaste. This will fill out in barrel and should become a refined and quite delicious Smith Haut-Lafitte that will repay time in bottle.

So aromatic and expressive, with pure currants and mint, plus some chocolate. Fennel too. Wow. Medium- to full-bodied with very deep fruit, fine, velvety tannins and a long, fine texture. The precision and depth are impressive. More fruit-driven than usual. It grows on the palate and is compact at the end. Very cabernet in the end. Almost like St.-Julien and Pauillac in nature. A blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

Decanter
Beautifully crisp and clear aromas, dark fruit, precise and expressive. Smokey violets and ripe blackcurrants with white chocolate. Fresh and vivid, this is vibrant and so clear but still with a round and filling texture. Maybe a more delicate take from Smith with the minerality much more present than in some vintages but there’s excellent length, hints of spice and bitterness as well as a lifted finish. Very gravelly, salty, chalky and cool. Balanced, elegant and totally delicious. Not as Smith as some, less dense and fleshy, but there’s no denying this is approachable. A little less smooth and velvety, this is more crunchy, chalky and grippy than usual but no less compelling. 3.6pH. A yield of 28hl/ha. Began the red harvest from the 3 September to the end. Ageing 50% new oak. 1% of Petit Verdot completes the blend.
