Château Chasse-Spleen, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel
Chasse-Spleen is de ster van de gemeente Moulis naast Château Poujeaux. Al sinds begin 1800 toen tijdens een bezoek van Lord Byron in 1821 hij de memorabele woorden sprak: "Quel remède pour chasser le spleen", en in het Nederlands "wat een remedie om de milt te reinigen", waaraan het Château volgens de verhalen zijn naam ontleent, is Chasse-Spleen een buitengewoon goede wijn. Nadat in 1976 de Taillan Groupe het kasteel aankocht is de kwaliteit spectaculair verbeterd. De kleur is diep rood tegen het zwarte aan. Een volle intense smaak van zwart fruit soms vermengd met een vleugje chocolade is typerend voor het Château. Rijping geschiedt op eiken vaten waarvan 40% nieuw is, gedurende 18 maanden. Een dijk van een wijn en niet te overtreffen in zijn appellatie met een wereldwijde schare liefhebbers.

Wijnhuis "Château Chasse-Spleen"
Als Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel is Château Chasse-Spleen al generaties lang een vaste waarde in Moulis-en-Médoc. Geen grootse allures, maar wijnen met een verhaal – elegant, krachtig en met die herkenbare charme waar je steeds opnieuw voor valt. De naam, ‘verdrijf de somberheid’ (een knipoog naar chasser le spleen), zegt het al. Het was de romantische dichter Lord Byron die in de 19e eeuw deze wijn op deze manier prees. Wat ons betreft terecht. Chasse-Spleen bewijst waarom liefhebbers dit château al jaren in het hart sluiten.’

Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil lead and licorice, the 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish with a very civilized expression of Moulis-typical grip. Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two.

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is very perfumed on the nose, offering vivid brambly red fruit, leather, undergrowth and cedar aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with a sappy opening and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, showing plenty of substance on the finish. While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them.

Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

Decanter
Heady fragrance on the nose, flowers and dark ripe black fruits. Full and filling in the mouth, this is rich and concentrated with fleshy, plush ripe strawberries and red cherries and juicy acidity. Has a sense of calmness and control to this. Well worked, smooth, crisp and pure but with grip. Concentrated but still juicy and lifted with an appealing chalky undercurrent that lingers on the cheeks and tongue. I love the soft herbal accents, subtle and warming toasted edges and the fresh mint finish. Lots going on. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.
