Château Palmer, 3ème Grand Cru Classé
Palmer moet gerekend worden tot de beste wijnen van de Bordeaux. Het is een zeer compacte en intense wijn. Een Cru die souplesse, charme en rondeur weet te brengen met een strakke, zuivere intensiteit. Sinds 2008 is het Château geleidelijk overgegaan naar biodynamische teelt. Dit heeft in 2017 geresulteerd in de Demeter certificering.

Wijnhuis "Château Palmer"
Château Palmer: een van de beste Grand Cru’s van Bordeaux en geclassificeerd als 3ème Grand Cru Classé van 1855. We vinden dit statige Château in het hart van appellation Margaux, tussen de Atlantische oceaan en de riviermonding van de Gironde. Dit prestigieuze wijnhuis werd in 1814 vernoemd naar toenmalig eigenaar Charles Palmer. Vandaag de dag draagt het Château nog altijd zijn naam en worden de ruim 52 hectare wijngaarden beheerd door twee families, waarvan één van origine Nederlandse familie. Er wordt gewerkt met drie verschillende druivenrassen: cabernet sauvignon en merlot in evenredige hoeveelheid, aangevuld met een subtiele hoeveelheid petit verdot.
Sinds 2008 experimenteert Château Palmer met biodynamische wijnbouw. Na vele positieve en succesvolle ervaringen met deze manier van werken, mag het domein zich sinds 2013 bestempelen als geheel biodynamisch. Alle percelen worden apart van elkaar gevinifieerd in een van de 54 tanks die het Château bezit. Op deze manier streeft Château Palmer naar de optimale expressie van elke cuvée en slagen ze erin de typiciteit van elk terroir te laten spreken. Vervolgens worden de wijnen gemiddeld 20 tot 22 opgevoed op eikenhouten barriques, waarvan iets minder dan de helft nieuw hout betreft.
Het Château maakt twee verschillende cuvées: Château Palmer en Alter Ego, waarbij de druiven voor beide cuvées van andere percelen afkomstig zijn. Daarnaast maakt dit wijnhuis nog een andere bijzondere cuvée, namelijk de ‘Historical XIXth Century Wine’. Hierbij wordt de traditionele Bordeauxblend aangevuld met 15% Syrah uit de Rhône. Palmer blaast hiermee een 19e -eeuwse traditie een nieuw leven in. Het beste van beide werelden als je het ons vraagt!

The late-ripening, low-yielding vintage has delivered a beautifully balanced wine of striking intensity in the 2021 Palmer. Unwinding in the glass with complex aromas of blackberries, exotic spices, licorice, violets and burning embers, it's full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with a deep, concentrated core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, expansive finish. If recent vintages of Palmer have set new records in their power and richness, the 2021 marks a return to the classical proportions of the 1990s—with all the additional concentration and precision that Thomas Douroux's pioneering viticulture and thoughtful winemaking have brought to the equation at this address in the interim. The grand vin is a blend of 56% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, picked between September 24 and October 15. Tasted twice.

Vinous
The 2021 Palmer is a heady, showy wine. Clay-rich soils yield a Margaux of breadth, power and textural richness. Black cherry, lavender, mocha and dried herbs infuse the 2021 with tons of character. A wine of density and intensity, this is seriously impressive. It is also going to need time to fully blossom. There's real juiciness from the Merlot, and an exotic quality that suggests it was picked on the later side. The 2021 spent one year in barrel and one year in cask, as is the norm these days here.

Decanter
A showstopper of a wine that offers a fragranced nose of purple flowers, blackcurrant, cola and liquorice. Smooth and silky, this has a gorgeous weight and texture, full and filling, a density of chalky, almost chewy tannins but bright, juicy acidity. Excellent construction, delicately layered but builds to an impressive whole that has such allure on the palate. A joyous wine brilliantly delivered.
