Château Palmer, 3ème Grand Cru Classé
Palmer moet gerekend worden tot de beste wijnen van de Bordeaux. Het is een zeer compacte en intense wijn. Een Cru die souplesse, charme en rondeur weet te brengen met een strakke, zuivere intensiteit. Sinds 2008 is het Château geleidelijk overgegaan naar biodynamische teelt. Dit heeft uiteindelijk geresulteerd in de Demeter-certificering. De 2021 is nu prachtig op dronk.

Wijnhuis "Château Palmer"
Château Palmer behoort tot de iconen van Margaux en is sinds 1855 geclassificeerd als 3ème Grand Cru Classé. Het domein kent een geschiedenis van ruim vier eeuwen en wordt vandaag beheerd door de families Sichel en Mähler-Besse, van origine Nederlands. De 66 hectare wijngaarden zijn beplant met cabernet sauvignon en merlot in gelijke delen, aangevuld met een klein aandeel petit verdot.
Sinds 2009 wordt er gewerkt volgens biologische en biodynamische principes. Wat begon met een proefhectare groeide in 2014 uit tot een volledig biodynamische werkwijze, met 2018 als eerste officieel biologische en biodynamische oogst. In 2023 volgde Demeter-certificering, al wordt dat niet op het etiket vermeld. Op het land lopen koeien en schapen die bijdragen aan de kringloop; natuurlijke gisten en minimale sulfietdoseringen versterken de puurheid en precisie van de wijnen.
Alle percelen worden afzonderlijk gevinifieerd in 54 tanks. De wijnen rijpen gemiddeld 20 tot 22 maanden, deels in barriques met lichte tot medium toasting en, sinds 2017, ook in grote foeders. Deze vaten zorgen voor extra frisheid en duurzaamheid, en benadrukken het fruit boven het hout.
Het château produceert drie cuvées. Château Palmer is de klassieke Grand Vin: krachtig, complex en met grote bewaarpotentie. Alter Ego, geïntroduceerd in 1998, komt van zand- en gravelgronden en biedt een verfijnde, elegante expressie van het terroir - geen tweede wijn, maar een eigen identiteit. Daarnaast is er de Historical XIXth Century Wine, geïnspireerd op de 19e-eeuwse "Hermitagé"-stijl, waarin een klein deel Syrah uit de Rhône de Bordeaux-blend aanvult.
Château Palmer staat daarmee niet alleen voor de grandeur van Margaux, maar ook voor een moderne visie waarin natuur, traditie en vakmanschap in balans samenkomen.

The late-ripening, low-yielding vintage has delivered a beautifully balanced wine of striking intensity in the 2021 Palmer. Unwinding in the glass with complex aromas of blackberries, exotic spices, licorice, violets and burning embers, it's full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with a deep, concentrated core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, expansive finish. If recent vintages of Palmer have set new records in their power and richness, the 2021 marks a return to the classical proportions of the 1990s—with all the additional concentration and precision that Thomas Douroux's pioneering viticulture and thoughtful winemaking have brought to the equation at this address in the interim. The grand vin is a blend of 56% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, picked between September 24 and October 15. Tasted twice.

Vinous
The 2021 Palmer is a heady, showy wine. Clay-rich soils yield a Margaux of breadth, power and textural richness. Black cherry, lavender, mocha and dried herbs infuse the 2021 with tons of character. A wine of density and intensity, this is seriously impressive. It is also going to need time to fully blossom. There's real juiciness from the Merlot, and an exotic quality that suggests it was picked on the later side. The 2021 spent one year in barrel and one year in cask, as is the norm these days here.

Decanter
A showstopper of a wine that offers a fragranced nose of purple flowers, blackcurrant, cola and liquorice. Smooth and silky, this has a gorgeous weight and texture, full and filling, a density of chalky, almost chewy tannins but bright, juicy acidity. Excellent construction, delicately layered but builds to an impressive whole that has such allure on the palate. A joyous wine brilliantly delivered.
