From ancient rootstock grafted in 1996 with Dijon clone 667, the 2021 Oppenheim Kreuz Spätburgunder GG opens with a clear, generous and slightly toasty cherry and red berry bouquet that is pretty Burgundian in its finesse and juicy ripeness. Juicy and intense on the palate, this is a full-bodied and powerful yet refined and vibrantly fresh Pinot with crystalline, mouthwatering acidity and a long, aromatic finish. Superb again. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.

The 2021 Spätburgunder Oppenheimer Kreuz Grosses Gewächs is from Triassic calcareous marl. There is richer, darker fruit, verging from red into black cherry. Smoke overlays the nose for now, while the aromatics almost touch Amarena cherry. This is darker, more brooding and heavier, with a dense tannic web. Yet there are aromatic red fruits with highlights of elderberry.
