Château Certan de May

Een Pomerol met relatief veel Cabernet in de samenstelling.Hierdoor is Certan de May een rustieke wijn met tonen van cederhout, kruiden en een bosachtige geur. Na een periode van onregelmatige kwaliteit in de jaren negentig is de wijn 'back on top'. Het concentraat is fenomenaal en geduld zal bij deze fraaie Pomerol zeker beloond worden.

Wijnhuis "Château Certan de May"

Het domein ontleent zijn naam aan een Schotse familie die deelnam aan de kruistochten en zich in de 16e en 17e eeuw vestigde in Pomerol. De bezitting kreeg als naam Vieux Château Certan, maar na de revolutie van 1848 werd het landgoed opgesplitst. Het kleinste deel bleef aan de familie Certan de May, en kreeg eerst als naam Petin-Certan. De bescheidenheid van dit domein contrasteert met de grootheid van de wijn.

Deze wijn is afkomstig uit de bekendste wijnstreek ter wereld, de Bordeaux. Het Bordeaux gebied Pormerol is beroemd vanwege zijn verleidelijke wijnen en beroemde châteaus zoals Le Pin, Trotanoy en de beroemdste en duurste van allemaal: château Petrus. De allermooiste en duurste wijnen van de merlot druif, vaak aangevuld met de cabernet franc, komen nog altijd uit de Pomerol.

Het lijkt wel of de merlot druif zich nergens zo goed thuisvoelt als op het Pomerol terroir. Pomerol wijnen zijn fruitig, vol en rond, zacht, verleidelijk en aards van smaak en na enige jaren flesrijping bezitten ze vaak een delicaat en sexy bouquet van truffel, aardse tonen en gerijpt zwart fruit.

Robert Parker The 2021 Certan de May has also turned out nicely in bottle, bursting with attractive aromas of dark berries, cassis, licorice and fruitcake, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and dynamic palate with good depth of fruit, supple tannins and impressive length on the finish. As readers may remember, this Merlot-dominant blend incorporates fully 37% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a figure that reflects the vintage (which favored these varieties) as well as a tendency to replant with Cabernet rather than Merlot over the last decade.

Vinous The 2021 Certan de May was picked from September 27 to October 11. There is a touch of herbaceousness on the nose here, a leitmotif of recent vintages that has left me perplexed in warmer growing seasons, though it's more understandable in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and modest depth; no greenness here, but there is a welcome touch of pepper toward the finish. This is an improvement for a Pomerol that can hit the ball out of the park if so inclined.

Decanter Fragrant red cherries and milk chocolate, super-bright and vibrant from the first sip; the light, almost spritzy texture and touch of sweet and sourness to the red fruit makes this fresh and energetic. The fruit focuses on strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants with graphite edges that give the minerality and touch of salinity to the palate also which is so appealing. Lifted and fresh but this also has the deep core and tight centre. The acidity and red fruit are to the fore right now but there is no doubt this is a serious wine with class and a long ageing potential. One I retasted several times. Beguiling.
